Chelsea have just made the second largest bid in their history for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, but they’re set to miss out on his signature to Liverpool.
That is according to a report from The Athletic.
They claim that Chelsea’s most recent offer for Moises Caicedo, 21, was worth up to £100million.
It is explained that Liverpool have now reached an agreement with Brighton to sign the midfielder for £110million, though.
The report adds that personal terms are expected to be a formality between the player and the Merseyside club, with his medical planned for Friday ahead of an imminent move to Anfield.
This will be a serious body blow to Chelsea supporters.
There’s been so much transfer speculation this summer that has pointed towards Caicedo becoming a Blues player, but Liverpool have swept in at the eleventh hour with a mammoth proposal.
In fairness, Chelsea’s £100million attempt is the second largest in the club’s history behind the £106.8million (Sky Sports) they paid for Enzo Fernandez in January. Remarkably, it’s even more than the £97.5million (Sky Sports) they coughed up for Romelu Lukaku a couple of years ago.
Journalist Ben Jacobs reported on Twitter yesterday that Chelsea’s immediate focus was on targeting Caicedo over Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.
However, it sounds like the Blues priority target has been snatched away from them by rivals Liverpool, who they face this Sunday in their Premier League opener.
Described as “incredible” by Adams Lallana on Sky Sports, Caicedo is a dominant defensive midfielder that would’ve slotted perfectly into the Chelsea line-up. We’ve got to admit watching him in a Liverpool shirt is going to be tough.
It’s going to be very interesting to see how Mauricio Pochettino’s side react now, though.
