Chelsea have told Brentford’s Ivan Toney he would be a key player at Stamford Bridge.

That is according to well-respected journalist Simon Phillips.

Phillips reported via his Substack on Tuesday that Chelsea are “very keen” on signing Ivan Toney in the January transfer window.

It is explained that the Blues have told the 27-year-old striker that he would lead their attack and be the talisman if he joins them.

He adds that Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino is a “big fan” of the Brentford centre-forward and is the one planning to make him pivotal.

TalkSPORT claimed earlier this month that Brentford have put a £60million price tag on Toney amid interest from Chelsea.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mirror reports that Toney has already spoken with Brentford manager Thomas Frank and expressed his desire for a new challenge. They added that Chelsea face competition from both Tottenham and Arsenal for his signature.

We would love Toney to lead the line at Chelsea, especially if he can join midway through this season.

He scored 22 goals in 33 Premier League games last season for Brentford, which is more than double any Chelsea player managed in the 2022/23 campaign.

This is the sort of ready-made player that could help elevate an extremely young group of players working under Pochettino.

If the Blues can find a 20-goal striker, it’ll get them so much closer to where they aspire to be.
