Chelsea made shock move to sign £12m PL player who has a ‘great relationship’ with Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea thought about signing Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris before bringing in Djordje Petrovic.

That is according to a report from The Telegraph.

Chelsea were in the market for a new No.2 after allowing Kepa Arrizabalaga to join Real Madrid and promoting Robert Sanchez to No.1.

The Blues signed Petrovic from New England Revolution in the end, but The Telegraph claims that a call went in to Lloris before the 23-year-old was eventually brought in.

Chelsea signing Lloris would have, of course, seen the the Frenchman reunite with Mauricio Pochettino after their time together at Tottenham.

Chelsea needed to recruit a new goalkeeper after Kepa’s departure, so looking at Lloris made sense.

The World Cup winner, who cost Tottenham around £12m, is not playing right now and is someone Pochettino knows.

The two got on really well with each other when the Argentine was at Spurs, with Lloris telling Sky Sports that he had a “great relationship” with his former manager.

Chelsea have gone for a more long-term option in Petrovic, though, which is quite interesting given that they have another young shot-stopper in Gabriel Slonina, who is currently out on loan.

Kepa could also return to Chelsea next year if Real Madrid do not buy him, so the Blues could have a bit of a goalkeeper dilemma going into the 2024/25 season.
