Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyokeres is a new name to appear on Chelsea’s transfer shortlist this week.

Viktor Gyokeres, who’s a 25-year-old striker, may be familiar to English audiences after a superb year in the Championship with Coventry City last season.

Now, he’s flying in the Portuguese top division with Sporting after joining them in the summer. He’s scored 15 goals in 18 games across all competitions so far this campaign. Incidentally, that’s one more than Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has scored (14) this season.

Chelsea shortlist in-form striker

The Evening Standard has claimed that Gyokeres is now on a five-man shortlist of strikers that Chelsea are interested in signing.

It is explained that Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino wants to add a large and physical centre-forward to his squad at Stamford Bridge, with Sporting’s 6ft 2in star ticking plenty of boxes.

The report explains that Gyokeres has an £89million releasee clause in his deal following a move to Lisbon a few months ago.

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Brentford’s Ivan Toney, Copenhagen’s Roony Bardghji and Club Brugge’s Antonio Nusa are the other four names on the Chelsea shortlist.

Football Transfers reported this month that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is prepared to pay whatever it takes to sign Osimhen from Napoli.

Viktor Gyokeres attracting Chelsea interest

Gyokeres is a really exciting frontman with a lot of great traits, so we’re not surprised to see a quick-fire start in Sporting colours. He’s becoming a regular now for Sweden’s national side, too.

He’s not the high-profile name of someone like Osimhen or Toney, albeit there’s a lot of potential that he could thrive in the Premier League. But it feels like it would be another big risk, especially if he costs nearly £90million next month.

Fans will be desperate for the club to get it right whichever way they decide to go next with the No 9 position.

If the Blues seriously want to start climbing the league ladder again, a prolific striker may be the fastest route to that.
