Chelsea are reportedly open to the idea of selling a first-team defender that they only signed last year.
As Chelsea prepare for the new 2024/25 Premier League season, which begins for them on Sunday at home to reigning champions Manchester City, there’s a lot of intrigue around how the defence will shape up.
Blues head coach Enzo Maresca has numerous central defenders at his disposal to select from.

Chelsea prepared to sell Axel Disasi
According to journalist Simon Phillips via his Substack, Chelsea are open to selling Axel Disasi in this summer transfer window.
It is understood that the 26-year-old defender is open to leaving the Blues as well due to concerns about his playing time in the upcoming season.
This comes after The Daily Mail reported this week that Disasi is considering his Chelsea future amid interest from clubs in France and Italy.
Disasi arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer in a £39m deal (Sky Sports) from Monaco, playing 44 games across all competitions during a decent debut season. It sounds like he’s concerned he may lose his starting position after the change of management, though.
The £80,00-a-week centre-half (Spotrac) is now willing to seek a move away from West London after just a year.
Should he stay?
If Disasi already has some doubt and is contemplating his future, perhaps a Chelsea exit isn’t the worse idea. Our only concern would be around how much he could realistically be sold for in the current transfer market, though.
There’s central defenders such as Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo already in the squad that will all be vying for a starting position at Stamford Bridge.
If Chelsea are to trim the squad down to a manageable size before the window shuts on 30 August, there may need to be one or two high-profile departures.
