Chelsea player was wanted by ‘several top clubs’ in the summer and could now be offered new deal

Chelsea could be about to hand one of their key players a new contract after interest in him during the previous transfer window.

There has been plenty of talk about Moises Caicedo potentially signing a fresh deal following his brilliant start to the season.

The midfielder already has four goals in 14 appearances. Last term, he managed just two in 50.

However, he may not be the only Chelsea player who is offered a new contract.

Malo Gusto was in demand in the last transfer window

Gusto has been one of Enzo Maresca’s most important players this season, and it looks like Chelsea want to hand him a deal that reflects that.

The Chelsea manager is not the only person who appreciates the full-back, though. According to RMC Sport, Gusto attracted interest from “several top clubs” in the summer.

However, the 22-year-old remained at Stamford Bridge and could now be offered a new contract, the French outlet claims.

Bayern Munich were one club linked with Gusto, but Nicolas Jackson was the only player they were able to sign from Chelsea.

Gusto has made 11 appearances for the Blues this season and featured nearly 50 times for them last term, showing his value to Maresca.

Chelsea shouldn’t offer Malo Gusto new contract

Maresca is certainly using Gusto a lot right now, but that does not mean Chelsea should hand him a new deal.

His existing one does not expire until 2030, and you can argue that he has not actually done enough on the pitch to warrant one.

Gusto is still trying to adapt to playing as an inverted full-back, a role he has struggled in at times. The Frenchman has been guilty of messing up attacks and putting his teammates in danger after making a bad pass in midfield.

He was also sent off against Nottingham Forest earlier this month after picking up two yellow cards.

Leon Osman was very critical of Gusto following his second caution, describing the challenge that he made as “the stupidest tackle in the world”.

All in all, Chelsea should probably hold off before giving the France international a pay rise.
