Chelsea target Jamie Gittens is ‘highly likely’ to leave Borussia Dortmund if one thing happens

Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens is one player who is currently being linked with a move to Chelsea.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Chelsea have been tracking Jamie Gittens as they weigh up bringing in another wide man.

It may be necessary, with Mykhailo Mudryk still unable to play for his club, though Borussia Dortmund selling one of their star players in the middle of the season seems unlikely.

In the summer, though, it could be a whole other story, which is good news for Chelsea.

Champions League qualification could decide Jamie Gittens’ fate

Dortmund’s task of keeping hold of Gittens could become much harder if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the 20-year-old is “highly likely” to leave the German club in the summer if they cannot retain their place in Europe’s elite competition.

Right now, that looks like a real possibility, with Nuri Sahin’s men currently 10th in the Bundesliga table.

In terms of how much he could cost, it has been claimed that Dortmund value Gittens at around £84m, which is huge money.

Chelsea in danger of missing out on Champions League football themselves

If playing in the Champions League is a requirement for Gittens, then Chelsea could also find themselves in a bit of trouble.

Like Dortmund, Enzo Maresca‘s men are currently not in the qualification spots either. That could change with a win against Wolverhampton Wanderers later, but the fact that they are even in this situation is really disappointing.

At one point, top four looked nailed on. But after failing to win any of their last five Premier League fixtures, Chelsea have a real battle on their hands and if they lose it, it could have ramifications for their transfer plans.

The Blues would find themselves at a big disadvantage in the race for Gittens, who should have plenty of options come the summer after the season he has had and given his potential.
