The future of Mateo Kovacic in Chelsea colours is reportedly unclear right now.

According to well-respected journalist Simon Phillips on his Substack, Chelsea are yet to hold “formal contract talks” with their 28-year-old star.

As it stands, the Croatia international’s current deal at Stamford Bridge is due to expire in 2024. Therefore, Blues supporters may be concerned about his future.

Phillips suggests that Kovacic is unlikely to accept any kind of wage cut on a new deal.

He thinks that the Blues may listen to offers for the central midfielder this summer, too.

Kovacic, who cost Chelsea £40million back in 2019, has been one of the best players in the Blues squad during the last few years.

The all-action central midfielder is such a technically gifted individual that controls things when he’s on form.

However, Phillips told GiveMeSport earlier this month that Kovacic has been considering his future in west London.

The journalist’s latest update will definitely worry Chelsea fans that want the player to stay and sign a new contract.

In our view, Kovacic can still play an important part in the new-look midfield at Chelsea.

Enzo Fernandez will surely be at the heart of things for the Blues moving forward, making a decent start to life in English football.

It would be great to see Graham Potter give a Fernandez-Kovacic combination a run of starts together in the weeks and games ahead.

Let’s hope Chelsea can kick into gear and sort out Kovacic’s future.
