Todd Boehly is reportedly yet to fulfil his promise to Ajax’s Edson Alvarez that Chelsea will bid for him.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea co-owner Boehly previously told Ajax’s 25-year-old star that he would make an offer to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

However, it is understood that the Blues are yet to make contact for the defensive midfielder since the conversation.

When discussing Alvarez, Jacobs told The Football Terrace: “Chelsea have been jumping from target to target to target. Let’s not forget, Todd Boehly told Edson Alvarez they would come back for him. And even though Ajax don’t want to sell mid season they haven’t come back.

“Agents and players start to wonder, they are coming for me, they are promising me the world, but are they actually going to come in for me?”

Edson Alvarez speculation

Sky Sports reported last year that Chelsea made a £43million bid in last summer’s transfer window for Alvarez.

The Mexico international remained in Amsterdam and has continued to be an important Ajax first-team player this season, but the links to west London refuse didn’t stop there.

Journalist Simon Phillips told GiveMeSport last month that Chelsea hold tentative interest in Alvarez and the player himself is expecting Chelsea to bid for him in January.

There’s been nothing yet from Graham Potter’s side as the transfer window rolls into its final week, though.

With Boehly stepping down in his role as sporting director earlier this month, it would be interesting to know if that’s had some sort of impact on any deal.

Chelsea continue to be linked this January with plenty of potential midfield recruits, but there’s not been speculation around Alvarez’s name.

He’s a quality all-action midfielder that is an interesting target for the Blues to consider.

Does Graham Potter view him as the right profile, though?
