Transfer insider Simon Phillips has claimed that Edson Alvarez is anticipating Chelsea to make another move for him in January.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Phillips explained that the Mexico international is awaiting a second offer from the Stamford Bridge hierarchy in the New Year.

Todd Boehly reportedly made a deadline bid for Alvarez, but Ajax rejected his £43 million approach.

The 25-year-old was apparently fully prepared to set sail for Stamford Bridge, and even refused to turn up to training.

But his Premier League dream might not be over yet.

Alvarez anticipates Chelsea offer

Chelsea are seemingly intent on adding Alvarez to their ranks once the market for signing players opens up again.

If Boehly makes an advance for the Ajax midfielder once more, he will be ready.

“I’m told there’s still tentative interest from Chelsea’s side in Alvarez. Obviously, they tried to sign him on deadline day in the summer. He was very keen to go. It looked at one point Ajax would accept our offer, but they didn’t in the end,” Phillips informed on the player’s mindset.

“They didn’t want to let him go that close to the deadline and they couldn’t replace him, so they told him he had to stay. He was disappointed by it and he’s waiting and expecting Chelsea to come back in for him again in January.”

Ajax might be unable to deny Alvarez his South West London fantasy if Boehly comes in with a bigger bid than before.

Money certainly talks in football, and the Dutch side are no strangers to selling their prized assets.

They did so in the deal for Hakim Ziyech to join Chelsea in 2020.

Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Antony and David Neres are amongst the numerous high-profile names to leave the Johan Cruijff ArenA for a higher price than what they arrived for.

Will Alvarez be the next on the construction line? Chelsea will certainly hope so.
