Newcastle United have reportedly looked into signing Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek during today’s transfer deadline, but the player’s wages have been the main issue preventing the deal.

Premier League side Newcastle, who are in action tonight in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, have been fairly active in the closing days of the January window.

Journalist Dean Jones reports that the Magpies have had interest in Loftus-Cheek right up to Tuesday’s deadline.

However, the Chelsea star’s wages have been a problem and they’ve not been able to get close to any kind of deal.

Dean Jones told GiveMeSport: “One player we have not heard much about today is Ruben Loftus-Cheek and while there is still interest around him, I think his wages are making any potential deal tricky.

“Newcastle have looked at it closely but struggled to get anywhere.”

Ruben Loftus-Cheek future

With just hours left in the January window, it would surely take something remarkable for Loftus-Cheek to move in the eleventh hour.

According to the Evening Standard recently, Newcastle and Crystal Palace have shown interest in the 27-year-old Blues midfielder. There’s not been any further progress in speculation around his future, though.

The £150,000-a-week player isn’t a nailed-on starter at Stamford Bridge, but he’s still made 20 appearances across all competitions this season.

His versatility is something that’s proved useful under Graham Potter since he took charge in west London.
