The future of Mateo Kovacic at Chelsea is now at risk of ending soon.
According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea have been unsuccessful so far in their attempts to hold talks with the 28-year-old about a new contract at Stamford Bridge.
With his current deal expiring in 2024, Blues supporters may be worried about losing their talented midfielder.
Phillips claims that Kovacic is keen to explore interest that comes his way this summer.
The well-respected journalist adds that he can “definitely” see the Croatia international leaving Chelsea at the end of the season.

Phillips told GiveMeSport: “Chelsea have been keen to speak to him, recently, over a new contract. That’s not happened yet and there are no signs of those talks starting up, as of now.
“Also, on Kovacic’s side of things, he is keen to explore all of his options this summer and will be looking at interest coming in as well as sitting down with Chelsea and at least speaking about a contract if he feels that’s what he wants to do.
“But it is open and I can definitely see Kovacic potentially leaving Chelsea in the summer.”

Recent speculation suggests that Kovacic is already attracting interest.
According to The Telegraph last month, Manchester City have been alerted to the fact that the central midfielder’s contract at Chelsea expires next year. Man City boss Pep Guardiola is said to be a “big admirer” of the Blues ace, too.
The suggestions above are that Kovacic actually feels open to the idea of leaving Chelsea.
If he’s prepared to check out offers for him, perhaps he’s already got one foot out the door.
In our view, we’d love for him to sign a contract extension in west London and play an important part of the side moving forward.
There’s no doubt he can be a top-class operator when he’s in the mood and gliding across the midfield, but it’s just about finding that consistency every game.
