Chelsea have always been said to be looking for opportunistic signings since the new owners came in, and The Chelsea Chronicle understands that they are going to make a move to sign one player on a free next summer.

The Blues have made additions such as Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho due to them being available for far lower fees than they once were considered at, with this approach being preferred to spending huge money on top-level stars.

Todd Boehly and co have maintained their plan for a number of years, and now see Tosin Adarabioyo, a free transfer last summer, as one of the most important members of the squad, due to experience and ability.

A new centre-back was requested by Enzo Maresca over the summer after Levi Colwill’s injury, however didn’t come his way, despite a very clear option being out there.

It looked for all the world like Marc Guehi would be on the move late in the summer transfer window, however a switch to Liverpool collapsed in the final moments.

Chelsea will make an offer to sign Marc Guehi next summer

Chelsea held an interest in Guehi throughout the window, however are now aware that he will be available at the end of the season for free when his contract expires.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has told The Chelsea Chronicle that Chelsea are going to put an offer on the table for Guehi at the end of the season.

He said: “We know about the Marc Guehi situation as well. Chelsea are banging that drum again, and they’re keeping tabs on that situation.

“They know he’s going to leave a free transfer and he will have an offer on the table from Chelsea, I’ve got no doubt about that. Can Chelsea win the race for Gueh? Why not?”

Crystal Palace hold interest in Chelsea man as Guehi replacement

Palace are going to need to replace Guehi when he departs at the end of the season, and have reportedly been targeting someone they know well at Stamford Bridge.

Trevoh Chalobah feature for them for the first half of last season, however was recalled from his loan move when the Blues started to struggle for options at the back.

Reports have stated that Palace want Chalobah permanently, and given how he has been treated in West London it certainly feels an achievable deal.

Chelsea fans would likely be gutted to see him go, however will know that the sale of an academy graduate cannot be discounted due to the financial implications.
