Chelsea’s stance on signing Matheus Cunha after Wolves star admits he wants to take ‘the next step’

Chelsea may not have to trigger the release clause of one of their targets to sign him this summer.

The Blues are expected to be in the market for an attacker or two as they look to bolster Enzo Maresca‘s squad.

Liam Delap is being lined up to address the centre-forward position, but he is not the only No.9 Chelsea are interested in.

The club are also thought to have the likes of Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres and Matheus Cunha on their radar.

Chelsea could sign Matheus Cunha for less than £63m release clause

In February, it was reported that Chelsea are interested in activating Cunha’s release clause.

The 25-year-old recently signed a new contract, but it has a release clause in it, thus allowing him to leave the club at the end of the season.

However, according to CaughtOffside, Wolverhampton Wanderers are willing to accept offers slightly below his €75m (£62.6m) clause.

The same outlet has also claimed that Chelsea are indeed keen on signing the Brazilian, who looks desperate to leave Molineux.

He has been a key player for Wolves this season, scoring 13 goals in 26 Premier League appearances, including one against Chelsea.

Vitor Pereira will not want to lose him, but his mind already appears to be made up.

What Matheus Cunha has said about his future

Cunha has made it clear that his future lies away from Molineux in a blow for Wolves.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the Brazil international said: “I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it. Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

For now, Delap still looks like Chelsea’s priority for the striker position going into the summer. Delap made an impact against Chelsea when Ipswich Town faced the Blues earlier in the season and would have impressed any of the club’s scouts who may have been watching him specifically.

If they cannot get him, though, then maybe Cunha will move up their list. With other Premier League clubs also thought to be interested in the former Atletico Madrid man, however, Chelsea could face a real fight for his signature.
