‘Completed medical’: £10m Chelsea player is leaving on loan, he’ll play Champions League next season – journalist

Chelsea forward David Datro Fofana is leaving the club on a season-long loan this summer.

That is according to well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano.

David Datro Fofana, who’s just 20, only joined the Blues back in January in a deal worth up to £10million (BBC).

However, the young striker barely got much of a look-in during the second half of last season, making four first-team Chelsea appearances across all competitions.

Now, the Ivory Coast international is heading for Germany to join Union Berlin on loan for the 2023/24 campaign.

Romano has claimed on Twitter that Fofana has completed his medical ahead of his switch to Bundesliga side Union Berlin.

It is understood that everything is agreed for the one-year loan deal, with the transfer announcement imminent.

“Understand David Datro Fofana has just completed medical tests as new Union Berlin player on loan from Chelsea,” Romano said.

“Agreement sealed and documents now signed for loan until June 2024 with no buy option included.

“Here we go.”

Union Berlin’s fourth-placed finish in the Bundesliga last season means they’ll play in the Champions League group stages during the new campaign. If you’re Chelsea youngster Fofana, you should be buzzing about the chance to experience Europe’s elite club competition.

The Athletic claimed back in February that most Chelsea staff much preferred Fofana over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after working with the pair in training at Cobham.

However, neither Graham Potter or Frank Lampard were prepared to give Fofana too many chances to impress on a matchday.

We hope that he can return next summer as a much improved player after a year in Germany with a strong Union Berlin outfit.
