Journalist Ben Jacobs has told the Football Terrace that Chelsea are confident they will secure the signing of Christopher Nkunku.

Reports over the last few days have claimed that the Blues have made great strides in their quest to secure their first signing for next summer.

The Frenchman was on the Blues’ radar over the summer, with Todd Boehly reportedly leading the charge to sign the forward.

However, their efforts seemed to be stifled when the 24-year-old signing a new deal to stay at Leipzig.

Since moving to the Bundesliga, he has been one of the league’s best performers. Former manager Jesse Marsch is a big fan of him, describing him in the past as ‘really intelligent.’

After reports broke that the Blues had held a secret medical over the summer, it has been speculated that they are close to agreeing terms on a deal.

Chelsea confident over Nkunku

Jacobs has claimed that the Blues are keen to keep the deal under wraps, as they look to fight off any competition for his signature.

He said: “The Chelsea challenge is that until things become 100% official, it’s now out there, and if any rival suitors wish to take the same approach. There’s nothing stopping them. But Chelsea are very confident.

“This is one that I think due to the dynamic of the deal, they will try to keep this under the radar until the early part of next year, and then we may see an announcement.”

Last summer, the Blues missed out on a number of targets late in the day as rival clubs entered negotiations.

This is a situation that the club are looking to avoid again by working early on the Nkunku deal.

A player as talented as the Frenchman is sure to attract many suitors, with it already being claimed that some other Premier League sides are interested in a deal.
