Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Twitter that Chelsea are today in talks with Benfica over completing the deal for Enzo Fernandez.

Reports since Christmas have claimed that the Blues are keen on beating rivals to a transfer for the 21-year-old.

A number of clubs, particularly Premier League rivals had reportedly been interested in a deal for the midfielder when the current campaign comes to an end.

However, all the signs suggest that Todd Boehly is looking to swoop in this month to secure what is likely to be Chelsea’s record transfer.

The release clause of Fernandez would see the Blues pay more than they did for their current highest swoop, loanee Romelu Lukaku.

Romano has claimed that talks over a potential deal are continuing today, with Chelsea hoping to get the final seal of approval from Benfica president Rui Costa.

Chelsea in Fernandez talks today

He said: “Chelsea and Benfica will hold new direct talks today for Enzo Fernandez. The deal is advanced as reported last week, but Rui Costa’s final approval is still pending – as key step to get it done.

“Enzo has agreed terms with Chelsea last Wednesday. He wants the move.”

Previous reports have claimed that the former Portugal international has previously attempted to convince his player against Fernandez joining the Blues, pointing to their current dire league position as a reason to hold out on moving.

Nevertheless, the Blues should do everything they can to get the deal done as soon as possible.

The 21-year-old has shown in the successful World Cup campaign that he is a sensational asset in a midfield three, a position he was undroppable from after establishing himself in the side.

With the current uncertain future of current options N’golo Kante and Jorginho, reinforcing with talents as promising as Fernandez are essential for the club.
