Journalist Ben Jacobs has told The Football Terrace that Todd Boehly is already working on signing Ajax’s Edson Alvarez next year.

The midfielder was linked with a deadline day move to the Blues in the last transfer window.

The Mexican was keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, with him even missing training on the final day of the window to try and force a move.

Nothing came to fruition however, as the Blues instead secured a loan move for Juventus’ Denis Zakaria.

The Swiss international is yet to feature for Chelsea this season. Despite making the bench on a number of occasions, his match fitness has been called into question.

Boehly working on Alvarez

However, Jacobs claims the Blues are still looking to move for Alvarez, this time with a new, more organised strategy.

He said: “With Alvarez at Ajax. They’re not thinking about scrambling anymore as they were towards the end of the window for some sort of midfield option. They’re saying ‘right, that was the tester, Todd Boehly’s been interim, now we’ve got more time, let’s put a strategy behind it so it isn’t chaos.’

“I think that’s going to reflect over the January window and the summer, that Chelsea are going to get their business done earlier. Everything about what they do is still going to be exciting and still going to be ambitious, but it’s going to be far more structured.”

The current midfield situation is very much up in the air. N’golo Kante is currently not looking likely to sign a new deal to stay.

There are also concerns over whether Jorginho will extend his current contract with the club, although the impact of a new man in charge may change both of these scenarios.

With the defensive qualities Alvarez offers, he could be a great option to sure things up in the middle of the park.
