Paul Merson thinks Chelsea target Josko Gvardiol could become “very special” in the future.

RB Leipzig defender Gvardiol, 20, currently has a lot of the footballing world talking about him.

The Croatia international has been one of the stars of the World Cup tournament in Qatar so far, putting in some dominant performances for his country.

Next, a quarter-final against Brazil today to really test how good he is.

Chelsea speculation

The Blues are heavily linked with the Leipzig youngster right now across the transfer rumour mill.

90min previously claimed that Chelsea felt optimistic about signing Gvardiol and believe they are close to getting him.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Twitter more recently that Graham Potter’s side are still actively working on a deal for the centre-half.

In our view, he’s the kind of addition to the defence that would be massive.

Thiago Silva doesn’t appear to be slowing down at the age of 38, but you feel at some stage soon that will happen.

Gvardiol ticks a lot of boxes when searching for a modern centre-back that’s good on the ball and defends aggressively, so Chelsea fans should be excited about him.

Gvardiol could become very special

Paul Merson has spoken extremely highly about Gvardiol ahead of Croatia vs Brazil:

“Josko Gvardiol could become a very special centre-back. People do have breakthroughs in the World Cup, and he could be one of them. I do like him, but he’s got his work cut out for him this weekend,” Merson told Sportskeeda.

If you consider he’s still only a 20-year-old, his potential does look frightening.
