Chelsea have now been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Diogo Costa after the Porto No.99 spoke about his future.

A story from 90min claimed that Chelsea – and also Manchester United – are monitoring the Portugal international, who has a £65m release clause, amid doubts over the ability of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy.

Now – however – Chelsea may have to cross Diogo Costa off the shortlist.

What’s the story?

Well, the 23-year-old has now revealed that he would like to stay at Porto.

As quoted by the Evening Standard, Costa said: “That’s the internet. It is a happiness and an honour to play for my favourite club.

“What they say is what they say, there is nothing concrete, I have a contract until 2027 and I hope to continue, let’s see.”

Costa has developed into one of the most exciting glovesmen across Europe, catching the eye with his passing ability as well as his excellent goalkeeping skills.

The Rothrist-born shot-stopper actually registered an assist in the Champions League back in October during a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in Group B.

In regards to his goalkeeping skills, the Portuguese stopper kept 20 clean sheets in 41 appearances throughout the 2022/23 campaign, conceding just 30 goals.

Who Chelsea could sign instead of Diogo Costa

Costa was not the only goalkeeper on Chelsea’s shortlist, and in all honesty, a move for Andre Onana seems more likely.

Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato believes Mauricio Pochettino has now given Chelsea the green light to offer Mendy and some money in an attempted player-plus-cash deal to sign Onana from Inter Milan.

The Cameroon international is currently preparing for the Champions League final against Manchester City on Saturday, so discussions over a deal are expected to intensify once that game is over.

According to Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports, Jordan Pickford is another potential option – as he told Give Me Sport.

Be sure to keep an eye on the situation, as Chelsea seem very likely to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.
