Journalist Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport that Chelsea are upping their pursuit of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The Benfica man currently has a release clause of around £106m.

While the Portuguese club do not want to see him leave, there is reportedly an acknowledgement that they are aware Chelsea can easily trigger that clause.

Club president Rui Costa has also claimed that despite their hesitance, they are willing to grant his wish if he does choose to leave.

It has previously been claimed that the Blues may push for the signing in January, given that he won’t be short of suitors in the summer.

Chelsea could sign Fernandez next week

Jacobs has claimed that he is continuing to hear of the club’s desire to bring him in as soon as next week.

He said: “So, it’s still being discussed, nothing is done or close yet. Chelsea are trying to speak with his agent. They’ve got to convince the player as well, and then you’ve got to convince Benfica.

“It’s a weird one because obviously, Chelsea could just trigger the release clause, and they’re quite happy to do that, but there’s a few things there and some complications with the clause and the fee that Chelsea are looking to get on top of before they can get this deal done.

“I was told twice in the last 12 hours that Chelsea are pushing hard for Enzo and it’s been happening now for the last week or so. So, it’s definitely a big deal that could go through, and it’s one to watch for the next week.”

Chelsea will be desperate to add to their ranks in midfield with the expectation currently being that both N’golo Kante and Jorginho move on when their contracts expire at the end of the season.
