Chelsea target Gavi is reportedly close to signing a new contract with current club Barcelona.

Gavi, 18, is a highly rated La Liga star linked with a potential switch to Stamford Bridge recently.

It’s been reported that Chelsea have held transfer meetings about possibly signing the Barcelona teenager, who’s on the radar of an entire host of top European clubs.

However, well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has offered an update about the youngster’s future.

Gavi close to Barcelona contract

According to Romano on Twitter, Gavi is ready to sign a fresh deal to stay at the Camp Nou “very soon”.

Romano explains that contract negotiations are entering “key stages”, with Barca still fairly confident that their rising star is going to extend his deal.

It seems like it’s only a matter of time until the central midfielder puts pen to paper.

There’s also likely to be a release clause worth a mega €1billion to secure his future.

Gavi, who’s regarded as one of the best young prospects in world football, would be an incredible coup for any side. It’s no surprise to hear Barcelona are close to tying him down, though.

He’s already made 10 senior caps for his country Spain, as well as cement himself as an important player in the Barcelona starting line-up.

His manager Xavi Hernandez has described him as a “spectaculal” midfielder in the past.

Chelsea may miss out on one of the game’s wonderkids in Gavi, but they can be more than proud with the talent coming from their own academy line.

The Blues have produced some spectacular footballers in recent years at Cobham, with Reece James and Mason Mount the shining example.

It’s intriguing to see that the club’s new ownership has paid attention to the importance of youth by signing by grabbing emerging stars with the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Gabriel Slonina.
