Liverpool and Chelsea could cross paths in the transfer window once again as the former draw up a list of potential Virgil van Dijk replacements.

In the 2023 summer transfer window, Chelsea and Liverpool went toe-to-toe for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia’s signatures.

The Blues won on both occasions and will be glad they did. Caicedo and Lavia were the two midfielders who started in Chelsea’s last win, helping Enzo Maresca‘s side to beat Newcastle United 2-1. The Caicedo-Lavia partnership is already one Darren Bent loves.

As for Liverpool’s affairs, Van Dijk’s contract expires at the end of the season, which could cause a transfer battle between the Reds and their Premier League rivals to ensue.

Liverpool and Chelsea both interested in Murillo

Chelsea considered signing Nottingham Forest’s Murillo in the summer, and it looks like they could weigh up making a move for him again.

According to TEAMtalk, Murillo remains on Chelsea’s shortlist. However, the same outlet claims that Liverpool are seriously thinking about bringing in the defender as a replacement for Van Dijk.

Their report says Murillo could cost up to £70m. He has been indispensable for Forest this season, starting all nine of their Premier League games so far.

Murillo is thought to be happy at Forest, but bids from Liverpool and Chelsea could potentially change things.

Murillo a realistic target for Chelsea

Another central defender who has recently been linked to Chelsea is Manchester City’s Ruben Dias.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea have Dias in mind at the moment. However, City selling the 27-year-old to Maresca’s side seems unlikely.

Dias remains a key player for Pep Guardiola, making 13 appearances under him in all competitions this season.

Murillo, then, is obviously a much more realistic target for Chelsea, with Forest having seemingly named their price for the Brazilian already.

It is a price, though, that Chelsea will probably not want to pay. £70m is a lot of money for a centre-half.
