Chelsea could face a transfer battle with Manchester City to sign Bayer Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz.

According to 90min, City representatives watched Florian Wirtz in Leverkusen’s 3-2 win against Hoffenheim over the weekend.

The Premier League champions are not the only club who seem to be interested in the 20-year-old, though.

The Daily Star recently claimed that Chelsea are keen on Wirtz. The same outlet also suggested that he could cost £80m.

Liverpool could look to sign the German as well as a potential Mohamed Salah replacement.

Florian Wirtz the next big Bundesliga export?

It looks likely. The likes of Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland recently left the Bundesliga for Real Madrid and City and Wirtz could now be in line for a similar move.

Loads of top clubs seem to be interested in the Leverkusen youngster, who has made a fine start to the season.

In 10 league appearances, Wirtz has scored three goals and provided four assists for Xabi Alonso’s side.

Kevin De Bruyne turns 33 next year and is starting to pick up injuries. So maybe, just maybe Pep Guardiola is starting to think about life after the Belgian.

A pitch like that, telling Wirtz he can come in to succeed De Bruyne and help City to continue winning the biggest honours in football, would probably leave Chelsea with no chance of landing the Germany international’s signature.

Chelsea probably need to be cautious about recruiting from the Bundesliga anyway. Their recruits from that division have not been as successful as City’s.

The Blues bought both Kai Havertz and Timo Werner from Leverkusen and RB Leipzig respectively back in 2020 and while they helped the club to win the Champions League, in the Premier League they offered very little.

Werner returned to Leipzig, while Havertz is now at Arsenal, so they are warning examples for the club.
