Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Robert Sanchez will start in goal for Chelsea against AFC Wimbledon.
The Blues host League Two opposition AFC Wimbledon tomorrow night at Stamford Bridge, which is a second round tie in the Carabao Cup.
With no European football this season for Chelsea, it feels essential to do well in the domestic cup competitions.
An early piece of team news is that Robert Sanchez, who’s currently the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, will be in the starting line-up this midweek.
When asked about Djordje Petrovic’s availability for Wednesday evening, Pochettino confirmed Chelsea’s new keeper won’t be making his debut. Apparently, they’re still waiting to hear if all the 23-year-old’s documents have been signed off and that he’s available to play.
Therefore, Pochettino shared that £25million gloveman (Sky Sports) Sanchez will keep his starting position.
He said, as quoted by the club’s official website: “I can confirm [we’re] going to play Sanchez. We don’t have the confirmation if Djordje can be available or not.
“He needs more time to train and to understand the way we want to play, the concept.”
It’s been a complete reshuffle in the goalkeeper department this window at Chelsea, with both Edouard Mendy (permanent) and Kepa Arrizabalaga (loan) leaving.
Sanchez, 25, has joined this summer from Brighton and looked fairly solid in his first three Blues appearances to start the season.
The Spanish shot-stopper will get a further chance to nail down a spot in the XI this Wednesday in the cup, albeit we hope he’s not busy against a lower league side.
As for Petrovic, he’ll have to wait a little while longer to play for the Blues after only joining last week.
Interestingly, Brad Friedel recently tipped Petrovic to take the gloves off Sanchez as Chelsea’s main goalkeeper, via Sky Sports.
