Myles Lewis-Skelly’s position on Chelsea transfer after Blues make checks on Arsenal star

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The Blues already have Marc Cucurella and Jorrel Hato for the left-back position, though the latter is not in the best of form right now.

Hato had a nightmare performance against Qarabag in the Champions League recently, making two errors that were punished.

Which Chelsea player are you looking forward to watching the most in the International Break?

However, it does not look like Lewis-Skelly will be replacing the Dutchman or Cucurella any time soon.

Myles Lewis-Skelly not open to joining Chelsea

On his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, journalist Simon Phillips recently shared that one source has informed him that Chelsea have made “background checks” on Lewis-Skelly.

According to the same source, though, the 19-year-old is not open to joining Enzo Maresca’s side.

It may come as a bit of a blow to those inside Chelsea who want Lewis-Skelly, but they just signed Hato, who deserves more time and opportunities.

On top of that, the club still have Cucurella. The Spaniard is a better defender than Lewis-Skelly and may actually be the best left-back in the Premier League at this moment in time.

Arsenal legend Alan Smith thinks Cucurella should be scoring more goals, but the 27-year-old netted seven times in all competitions last season. That is excellent for a full-back.

Marc Cucurella a superior defender to Myles Lewis-Skelly

Being the older and more experienced player, you would expect Cucurella to be a better defender than Lewis-Skelly.

Still, with the England international being linked to Chelsea and playing the same position as Cucurella, it is worth comparing some of their stats.

Lewis-Skelly has not started a game in the Premier League this season, so it is better to consider his numbers from the 2024/25 campaign.

That campaign, Cucurella topped his Arsenal counterpart when it came to goals, tackles, interceptions and clearances, though he did play significantly more minutes.

It is difficult to use stats for defenders, but even from the eye test you can see that few full-backs in the world are better than Cucurella.
