Chelsea have finally announced the signing of Mathis Amougou from Saint-Etienne after an anxious wait for supporters for the official confirmation.

During Monday’s busy deadline day for the winter transfer window, Mathis Amougou was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea and Saint-Etienne held talks yesterday over 19-year-old star Amougou, who’s an exciting young midfielder.

In fact, journalist Fabrizio Romano reported via X that Amougou signed his contract with Chelsea on deadline day for the €15m (£12.5m) transfer.

The good news is that the deal is now official as the Blues left it late to reinforce their options in midfield.

Mathis Amougou is officially a Chelsea player

Chelsea announced on Tuesday afternoon via X that Amougou is now officially their player.

The teenage defensive midfielder has penned a huge eight-year contract with the Blues, which is becoming more and more common under this ownership.

Amougou has spoken for the first time since his move to West London was confirmed. He told Chelsea’s official website: “I’m very happy. It’s an honour for me to sign for such a big club like Chelsea. They believe in young players and the process they have in place to develop us is fantastic.”

The new signing will begin training with the Blues squad in the coming days, so it’ll be interesting to see what he can contribute in the second half of the season.

Rumours suggested that Chelsea could loan out Amougou immediately to sister club Strasbourg, but he’ll get his chance now to try force his way into Enzo Maresca’s plans.

What can Mathis Amougou bring to Chelsea?

Even though Amougou will be an unknown profile to most Chelsea fans, they’ll be intrigued by the fact that he’s immediately joining the senior group.

We’re not sure whether or not he’ll be good enough yet to play for Maresca’s side, but it’s worth highlighting that he’s being playing regularly recently in Ligue 1. The central midfielder played 17 league games for Saint-Etienne this campaign before his high-profile transfer to Stamford Bridge.

It’s fair to point out that the Blues needed an extra reinforcement in central midfield because of Romeo Lavia’s injury, which has increased the workload on Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

On paper, Chelsea’s trip to Brighton on Saturday night in the FA Cup could be a great first chance to take a look at Amougou in action.

We’d have preferred recalling 20-year-old midfielder Andrey Santos from his loan with Strasbourg in the January window, but this way it avoids upsetting another club under the BluesCo ownership.
