Chelsea are close to signing a new midfielder, with the club likely to have concerns about some of their current options going forward.

Chelsea do have Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, but Romeo Lavia has struggled to stay fit since arriving at the club in 2023.

Enzo Maresca is also in possession of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall; however, the former Leicester City man has constantly been overlooked this season.

Chelsea have now turned their attention to Saint-Etienne’s Mathis Amougou. While Amougou could be joining Maresca’s side, Joao Felix could be leaving. Felix is set to join AC Milan in a £5m loan deal before the transfer market shuts.

Chelsea set to pay Saint-Etienne £12.5m for Mathis Amougou

It has taken until deadline day, but Chelsea’s transfer window has finally come to life.

The Blues are closing in on a deal to sign Amougou from Saint-Etienne. According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are set to pay €15m (£12.5m) for the 19-year-old’s signature and the “final details” are now being sorted.

Despite still being a teenager, Amougou has got a lot of minutes at Saint-Etienne this season. In total, he has made 17 appearances in Ligue 1.

Chelsea were interested in Nico O’Reilly, but Manchester City are very reluctant to let him go.

Mathis Amougou has said yes to Chelsea

Chelsea do not have to worry about a last-minute rejection from Amougou. Romano has also reported that the Frenchman has said yes to Chelsea with terms “on the verge” of being agreed.

Clearly, Amougou is a young midfielder with a lot of potential, but you have to question whether he is right for the Blues at this moment in time.

Maresca’s squad lacks experience. Some Chelsea supporters probably would have liked to have seen a more seasoned midfielder come in.

With Andrey Santos already on the club’s books and thriving at Strasbourg, Chelsea really could have just recalled him if they are happy to settle for a young midfielder during this transfer window.
