Chelsea could reportedly find it very difficult to sign Ajax’s Edson Alvarez in January.

Alvarez, 25, is a talented defensive midfielder that was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.

Sky Sports reported that Chelsea actually made a £43million bid for the Ajax star, who ended up staying in Amsterdam.

De Telegraaf added that Alvarez tried to force a move to West London to join the Blues.

The Mexico international has knuckled down by playing a key role in the Ajax XI this season, making 15 appearances across all competitions so far in both domestic and Champions League football.

Difficult to sign Edson Alvarez in January

According to well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano, Alverez is a player that’s a long-term Chelsea target.

However, it’s going to be a big challenge to prise him away from the Eredivisie in January.

“He’s always been on Chelsea’s list, but Ajax will try to keep him at least until the end of the season,” Romano explained.

“There are no negotiations ongoing now, also no decision will be made by Chelsea on new midfielder in October; it will take some time. Not an easy one, for sure.”

The Athletic claimed earlier this month that Alvarez is an individual that Chelsea do still have a strong interest in signing.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Graham Potter shapes his midfield moving forward, especially as N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are out of contract next summer.

Alvarez is a combative defensive midfielder that looks like a good fit for the Premier League with his strength, as well as his technique on the ball.

Blues fans should be keeping a close eye at the World Cup next month to see how he fares in Group C with his nation Mexico.
