‘One to keep open’… Chelsea are really thinking about making signing after departure

Chelsea do not seem to be too confident about strengthening one area of their squad during this transfer window but could still try to.

With Ian Maatsen heading to Borussia Dortmund, there is a possibility of Chelsea signing a new left-back.

However, while Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Substack that it is “one to keep open”, the journalist says Chelsea do not believe there is a good opportunity currently on the market.

Left-back has been a big talking point at Chelsea of late.

Levi Colwill has been playing there this season, but the 20-year-old is a central defender by trade and club legend Pat Nevin wonders if he is going to stay in that position after a tough outing against Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

Chelsea considering bringing in left-back

At this point, it is only logical for Chelsea to be open to bringing in a new left-back.

Not only is Maatsen going, but Ben Chilwell has once again struggled to stay fit, while Marc Cucurella has had his own injury problems this season.

It seems, though, that the Blues are not quite convinced by what is currently on the market. It would not be a surprise, then, to see Mauricio Pochettino try to get to the end of the campaign with what he has at his disposal.

Not everyone will be happy to see that, as it means Colwill is likely to continue playing at left-back. Chilwell’s return, however, could perhaps see the England international return to central defence.

After Colwill’s performance in the defeat to Middlesbrough, maybe that is the way to go. But it is down to Pochettino, who had Colwill at left-back even when Chilwell was fit.

It is one of many dilemmas the Argentine has at Stamford Bridge right now and may not be addressed until the next transfer window.
