Pochettino has picked out £25m star as player he wants at Chelsea, Boehly is going to sign him

Brighton & Hove Albion star Robert Sanchez is Mauricio Pochettino’s preferred candidate to provide competition to Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea and Todd Boehly have agreed a £25m deal with the Seagulls to sign Robert Sanchez, and the 25-year-old is a player who Pochettino has specifically chosen.

The Blues were in need of a new shot-stopper following Edouard Mendy’s exit.

The Senegal international decided to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli after losing his spot in the team to Kepa.

Chelsea had been linked to other keepers before moving for Sanchez, with The Guardian claiming back in June that they were interested in Andre Onana before his switch to Manchester United.

While Kepa was able to win his place back in Chelsea’s starting XI last season, there will still be some doubts about him.

If the Blues were totally convinced with the 28-year-old, then they would not be splashing out £25m on a Premier League-level goalkeeper.

After his first campaign at Stamford Bridge, Kepa struggled to hold down a place in Chelsea’s team, losing his spot to Mendy before eventually reclaiming it.

Ultimately, while Kepa may start the new season as the Blues’ No.1, history suggests that Sanchez could have an opportunity to oust him out of the side.

Sanchez is a very capable goalkeeper, with his former manager at Brighton Graham Potter once describing him as a “monster”.

With Levi Colwill also returning from his loan spell at the Amex Stadium, Chelsea could have quite a different-looking backline this upcoming season.

Improving in attack has to be Pochettino’s focus, though. Last term, the Blues only managed to score 38 goals in the Premier League. That number will obviously have to go up if they are to make a return to the top four.
