Premier League club step up talks to sign £50m Chelsea player, his wages are an issue

Chelsea have just ramped up negotiations with a Premier League club about a potential deal for a £50m Blues player.

Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell, 27, is one of numerous high-profile players to be omitted from the first-team plans at Stamford Bridge this season. He’s not featured in a matchday squad this campaign, with Enzo Maresca preferring Marc Cucurella or Renato Veiga at left-back.

Blues head coach Maresca recently explained it’s better if Chilwell leaves this summer. Will he get a transfer in the remaining few days of the summer window, though?

TalkSPORT reported last week that Chelsea offered Chilwell to Manchester United. There’s now been a fresh update regarding interest from the Premier League giants in the £50m (Sky Sports) English full-back.

Manchester United step up Ben Chilwell talks

According to The Independent, Man United and Chelsea have stepped up discussions over a potential Chilwell move to Old Trafford, which is separate from the ongoing talks about Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling.

It is explained that United need a new left-back in their squad, so they’ve explored a potential deal for Chilwell.

The report says that the finances are still way off because of the Chelsea defender’s high wages, but there may a solution if Sancho leaves Old Trafford and moves to Stamford Bridge. Apparently, there’s a possibility that Chilwell could go to United and Sancho to Chelsea on loan for the season, with a deal struck on wages for the pair.

The Telegraph recently reported that Chelsea have weighed up a move for £40m-rated Sancho. It was suggested that Blues winger Sterling could be involved in a swap deal that would see him move in the opposite direction.

However, it now sounds like a Chilwell-Sancho swap is looking the more likely scenario.

Ben Chilwell desperately needs move

Let’s hope that Chilwell can get himself a transfer in the next 72 hours before the window shuts. Alternatively, it could be a long few months for him while he waits for January.

The attack-minded left-back can be a quality player on his day, but form and his fitness has been a major issue for a couple of years now.

It must’ve been a real blow when he was overlooked by England for Euro 2024 this summer, so he needs a fresh start to try get back on track.
