Chelsea youngster Ian Maatsen completed his move away from Stamford Bridge earlier today on a temporary basis.

Chelsea confirmed via their official website on Friday morning that Ian Maatsen has signed a contract extension with the Blues that runs until 2026.

In addition, the 21-year-old has joined German giants Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season.

This isn’t a deal that we would’ve gone ahead with, but there’s certainly positives and negatives to it.

First of all, Maatsen would be playing games at left-back for Chelsea if we were in the manager’s dugout. Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino clearly didn’t fancy him in that position, though.

He’s a left-back by trade and we’ve seen him play that role superbly in the past, but Pochettino mainly used him as a winger during 15 appearances in the first half of the campaign. It’s worth mentioning that most appearances were off the bench, too.

Hopefully, Maatsen’s move to Dortmund will allow him to start playing games regularly at full-back.

Interestingly, The Telegraph claimed this week that Chelsea believe that Maatsen’s value could soar during his time in Germany. The likes of Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho previously had mega success in the Bundesliga playing in the famous yellow shirt.

The report mentioned that the Blues feel they may be able to cash in on the left-sided player for big money in the summer. However, we’d like to see if he could be reintegrated into the squad next season if he impresses in Germany.
