Chelsea could face competition from Real Madrid for one Premier League star they are reportedly interested in.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is a player who Chelsea are said to be big admirers of.

According to the Daily Mail, the Blues have registered an interest in the 21-year-old ahead of the summer.

However, the same outlet has also claimed that Branthwaite has attracted Real Madrid’s attention.

He has been a key player for Everton this season, making 18 appearances in the Premier League under Sean Dyche.

Real Madrid and Chelsea both interested in Jarrad Branthwaite

It looks like there could be a transfer battle for Branthwaite in the summer, with Real Madrid and Chelsea two potential participants.

It is a bit of a surprise to hear about Real Madrid’s interest in Branthwaite, with the centre-back not hitting that superstar level just yet. Chelsea, less so, as he fits the profile of player they have been signing lately and is proving himself in the Premier League.

Branthwaite is leading the way for both interceptions and clearances per game in Everton’s squad (WhoScored). The England U21 international is also third for aerial duels won, winning 2.6 on average.

Everton’s financial issues also mean that they could be open to doing business in the next transfer window.

The Merseyside club were recently charged with breaching Premier League profitability and sustainability rules.

If they need to make money, then, Branthwaite is a logical name to put up for sale amid Real Madrid and Chelsea’s interest, though you suspect that Everton fans would not be happy about that.

With Thiago Silva possibly leaving Chelsea at the end of the season, it would be great if the Blues brought in a more experienced centre-half. But if they want a young defender, then Branthwaite would not be a bad choice.
