Chelsea are closing in on confirming the sale of one player who looks set to make them a significant profit this summer.

It cost the Blues just £12m to sign Renato Veiga a year ago, however they are now discussing a deal for nearly three times that figure to see him move to Atletico Madrid.

The La Liga side are interested in a deal for Veiga as a result of not being able to sign Cristian Romero from Tottenham, quickly turning their attention to the West side of London.

The Portugal international had been given plenty of chances to feature in his first six months at the club, and was one of the key players for Enzo Maresca in the Conference League.

Renato Veiga ‘really disappointed’ at Chelsea as move to Atletico Madrid gathers pace

However, it became clear that Veiga wanted to play at centre-back, whereas Chelsea had originally signed him to provide cover and competition for Marc Cucurella.

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey has exclusively told The Chelsea Chronicle that the defender is ‘really disappointed’ that the club did not see him play in this position at Juventus and give him a chance to do the same at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “Renato Veiga was really disappointed he did not get the chance back at Chelsea, he believed he had done enough at Juventus to show he should be considered as a central defender.

“But Chelsea had other ideas, they didn’t like the way the move was forced on them, plus they are ready to make a good profit on a player in just 12 months.

“Veiga’s people have already held talks with Atletico and the two clubs are now set to advance with their talks but this deal could be done quickly.”

Chelsea’s potential Veiga replacement

With the seemingly imminent departure of the 21-year-old, Chelsea will be well aware they are very short of options for the left-back position.

It has been reported that they are keen on signing Jorrel Hato, and are currently slightly ahead of rivals Arsenal and Liverpool in a race for the deal.

The Blues are willing to sell Veiga and Ben Chilwell to get Hato, with neither looking as if they will play for Chelsea again.

They have been fans of the Netherlands international for some time, and could make it a summer of signing Dutchmen. They are being strongly linked to the addition of Xavi Simons too.
