Chelsea are set to sell Renato Veiga this summer and could make a good bit of profit on the defender.

After signing him for just £12m last year, Chelsea could receive around £35m for Veiga during this transfer window.

Atletico Madrid have a strong interest in the 21-year-old and could be the club that help Chelsea to gain their profit.

If they are, then the Blues may have their fierce London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to thank.

Atletico Madrid turn to Renato Veiga after hitting Cristian Romero wall

Atletico are talking to Veiga’s people about a switch to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, but the Portuguese is not their first-choice target.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico have only turned to Veiga after failing to strike an agreement with Tottenham to sign Cristian Romero.

Romero is into the final two years of his contract, so the Spanish club would have been hoping to get him for a cut-price fee.

However, The Telegraph reported in June that Spurs will not be bullied into selling their star defender and want over £60m for him.

As a result, Atletico have turned their attention to Veiga, giving Chelsea the opportunity to make some serious profit.

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Renato Veiga more serious than Bayern Munich’s

Bayern Munich are another club who are thought to have Veiga on their radar. It has also been reported that Chelsea could offer Veiga to Bayern in a swap deal for Kim Min-jae.

A report from The Standard, though, states that Atletico’s interest in the Portugal international is more serious than the Bundesliga champions’.

Veiga barely played at Chelsea last season, making just 18 appearances before joining Juventus on loan. But it looks like he did enough at both sides to convince a couple of clubs.

There is a long way to go before the transfer window closes; Atletico could still end up with Romero. But if that is completely dead, then they are likely to sign Veiga by the looks of things.
