Denzel Dumfries has reportedly been surprised by his reduced role at Inter Milan after the World Cup, with a possible transfer to Chelsea becoming more concrete.
According to Calciomercato, the defender ‘did not expect to be relegated to the bench’ following his excursions in Qatar, a sign he could be heading for the exit door this month.
Dumfries has not started any of Inter’s five games since returning from international duty with Holland.
He did not feature at all in the Supercoppa Italiana victory over AC Milan on Wednesday evening.
Before the World Cup, the 26-year-old was heavily involved in Simone Inzaghi’s plans, with the right-wing back position his to lose.
It now seems the Dutchman has lost out to former Manchester United man Mateo Darmian in this area of the field.
Is Denzel Dumfries destined for Chelsea?
With Darmian seemingly ahead of Dumfries in the pecking order, a move in January for the latter is becoming more likely.
This might be music to the ears of those stationed at Stamford Bridge, who apparently hold firm interest in the full-back.
Calciomercato claim that Chelsea, ‘above all’, are the Premier League side with the best chance of landing Dumfries before the transfer window closes.
It has been said that the player’s agent was in London this week, potentially to suss out suitors for his client.
Chelsea certainly wouldn’t be a bad place to start, considering they are in need of cover at right-back.
