Report: Chelsea at front queue to sign Tuchel's former player

Chelsea are in pole position in the transfer race for Ousmane Dembele after being offered the chance to sign the Barcelona winger in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports’ Gary Cotterill.

There are only a few hours left in this transfer window, and Chelsea will now have to decide whether they want to pull the trigger.

Barcelona are reportedly “desperate” to offload the France international who previously refused to sign an extension and take a pay-cut.

Cotterill now suggests that Chelsea are the most likely destination for Dembele if he is going to leave Barcelona this month.

“What I’m hearing from Barcelona’s end is that Chelsea are now right at the front of the queue to sign Dembele in this window” the Sky Sports journalist said on the deadline day.

“Tuchel is a big admirer of Dembele, they worked together at Borussia Dortmund.

“I’m told that Chelsea have again been offered the chance to sign Dembele this January.”

An earlier report from France also claimed that Dembele is “in favour” of joining Chelsea due to several reasons, including a potential reunion with Tuchel.

The problem remains the same, however. Chelsea already have arguably too many attackers in the squad.

Sky Sports also added that the player’s high wages might be one of the main obstacles Chelsea would have to overcome.

The Blues can also opt to wait for a few months and try to sign Dembele on a free transfer instead. Although, this would likely mean more competition.

The 24-year-old featured just six times in La Liga this season and registered two assists.
