Report: Chelsea considering signing £50m midfielder who scored against them earlier this season

Reports have claimed that Chelsea are considering signing Southampton’s Romeo Lavia next year.

According to the Evening Standard, the Blues are weighing up the 18-year-old as a potential replacement for Jorginho and N’golo Kante, whose contract situations are up in the air.

The highly-promising Saints man has enjoyed a fine start to his Premier League career, with him establishing himself as an important member of the first team when he is fit.

His impact was on display first hand by the Blues earlier this season, when his fierce strike from distance cancelled out a Raheem Sterling goal, as Southampton went on to win 2-1.

This reportedly left an impact on Todd Boehly and the Chelsea chiefs, who if rumours are to be believed had a late £50m bid for him rejected late in the transfer window.

Now, the Evening Standard are reporting that the Blues are considering moving for him again if they are forced to invest in the midfield areas.

Kante is currently unwilling to sign a new contract to stay at the club, based on the terms currently offered to him by the owners.

The Frenchman’s importance to the Blues has been obvious in the games he has been missing this season, with the midfield struggling without him since his injury in the second game of the season.

Jorginho meanwhile is also yet to commit his future to the club, with his contract also set to expire at the end of this season.

There have been reported fears at the club that the Italy international is currently running down his deal at the club, in order to grant himself a free run at returning to the Serie A next year.

If one or both of the stars leave, a big-money replacement will be required, and Lavia is likely to cost a lot after only joining this summer.
