Chelsea are reluctant to let key midfielder Mason Mount join Liverpool this summer, but his contract situation puts the club in a difficult position, according to Football London’s Bobby Vincent.
Mount is getting closer and closer to entering the final year of his contract at Chelsea, after which the club is expected to be open to listening to offers for him.
It makes sense to cash in on a player rather than risk losing a valuable asset on a free transfer, but in Mount’s case, the decision could mean strengthening a direct rival.
Football London journalist Vincent claims that both Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in the 24-year-old, but Liverpool are understood to be leading the race.
“The length and value of the contract are the two main obstacles holding an agreement up for Chelsea and Mount,” Vincent adds on Twitter.
“Both parties ultimately want the same thing but are some way off, as it stands, extending his stay.
“Chelsea of course do not want to sell Mount to a direct rival like Liverpool.
“But Todd Boehly and the new ownership group are definitely taking a more decisive approach when it comes to players reaching the final months of their contracts.”
Liverpool are reportedly confident that they can convince the England international to move to Anfield and would try to do so on a cut-price deal.
A recent report also claimed that Jurgen Klopp has made Mount Liverpool’s priority summer target.
Obviously, Mount’s contract situation means Chelsea are not in a strong position to command a high price.
On a positive note, neither Chelsea nor Mount have given up on a possible contract extension, and many fans will hope that both parties can reach an agreement this summer.
