Report: Chelsea could return in January with another bid to try sign 'extraordinary' 20-year-old player

Chelsea could reportedly make another bid in the January transfer window to sign RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Gvardiol, 20, is an exciting young player that was strongly linked with a potential move to Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.

The Blues reportedly launched a mammoth £77million offer earlier this week for the Leipzig centre-back.

However, the Croatia international ended up signing a new long-term contract with his current Bundesliga club.

Chelsea’s interest in the Leipzig star may not be completely over, though.

Chelsea could make Gvardiol bid in January

Despite Gvardiol’s decision to sign a new deal in Germany, Thomas Tuchel’s Blues still have him on their radar.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea may even return with a fresh offer to sign the Leipzig defender as early as the January transfer window.

The report explains that the London club will still be looking to find a long-term successor to ageing centre-half Thiago Silva.

Hailed as “extraordinary” by Ivica Olic in the past, Gvardiol is one of the brightest young defenders that Chelsea obviously think a lot of after a mega bid.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the left-footed ace gets on in the next few months in Leipzig colours off the back of transfer speculation.

Blues defence

With Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger both exiting in the summer, it was inevitable there would be big change in Chelsea’s backline.

Let’s see if a new back three of Silva, Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly is tried out.
