Chelsea are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, according to reports.
Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga are the two senior keepers at Stamford Bridge right now, with the latter acting as the first-choice option for most of this season.
However, German publication BILD claims that Chelsea want a new No.1 goalkeeper.
Kepa may have cost nearly £72million (Sky Sports) to sign from Athletic Bilbao back in 2018, but he’s been unable to develop into a top-class keeper. Meanwhile, Mendy’s form has dropped off considerably after a magnificent start at the Bridge.
BILD says that Chelsea want to sign an upgrade on both Kepa and Mendy, which is why they’ve turned their attentions towards the Bundesliga.
It is understood that Dortmund’s star goalkeeper is now a player on Chelsea’s radar.
The report explains that the German giants want to keep Gregor Kobel and a new contract may be in the pipeline for him.
However, the 25-year-old shot-stopper is keen to be given a more senior role within the Dortmund dressing room.
It’s been a pretty strong individual campaign so far from Kobel, who’s got 12 clean sheets in 29 Dortmund games across all competitions.
The Switzerland international is emerging as one of the best young goalkeepers around. At 25, his peak years should definitely still be out in front of him.
We can fully understand why Chelsea are drawn towards the Dortmund star because the keeper position in West London needs fixing next season.
If the Blues want to be challenging at the very top, they need a much steadier and reliable performer in-between the sticks over the course of an entire campaign.
The Evening Standard recently claimed Chelsea would be open to selling Kepa if the right kind of offers come in.
