Report: Chelsea have told 22-year-old defender who 'has everything' they're really keen to sign him

Chelsea have reportedly told Barcelona centre-back, Ronald Araujo, how they feel about him.

According to Marca, Araujo has been made aware by the Blues that they want him to be part of the Stamford Bridge project.

Why are Chelsea showing Araujo attention?

With several key members of Thomas Tuchel’s defensive unit edging closer to an exit this year, potential reinforcements in this area of the field are being monitored.

Jules Kounde is still the club’s top transfer priority, yet it appears the chain of command have stuck with Spain in their pursuit of a new defender.

Araujo is around four months younger than Kounde, but is catching up to the Sevilla star in terms of career achievements.

Who is Araujo?

The 22-year-old has already played 61 times for the Catalonians, following his move from Boston River in 2018.

He was promoted from Barca’s B-team in the subsequent season, making six La Liga appearances.

His big breakthrough arrived under Ronald Koeman, who gave his namesake a regular starting role in the side.

Koeman’s departure last October did not mean a change in fortunes for Araujo, who remains an established member of Xavi’s rear guard.

Injuries have hampered the Uruguayan international slightly, a minor blotch on what’s been a rather reassuring CV up to his point.

Marca state that the player has asked for an improved contract, which runs out in 2023, to reflect his rise in the past few months.

Barca are yet to adhere to Araujo’s wishes, despite him embodying a brighter future for the crumbling Camp Nou.

“Araujo is a great centre-back, and will be for 10 or 15 years,” said fellow centre-half and teammate Gerrard Pique.

“He has everything.”

Their loss could be Chelsea’s gain, who continue to question the commitments of Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

In a strange turn of events, the Blues could exchange one of the three for Araujo, as Barca continue to target free agents.
