Report: Chelsea no longer among 'finalists' in transfer race for 22-year-old
Reported Chelsea target Aurelien Tchouameni has reportedly reached agreements with both Real Madrid and Liverpool, who are currently in negotiations with AS Monaco, according to French outlet RMC Sport.
The report claims that the “finalists” in the race for the 22-year-old has now been reduced to just two clubs; Real Madrid and Liverpool.
Tchouameni has reportedly reached agreement with both clubs and will make a decision before the end of the week.
Real Madrid, in particular, have shifted their main focus to the pursuit of Tchouameni after Kylian Mbappe’s surprise Paris Saint-Germain extension.
This is bad news for Chelsea, whom according to the same publication, were in the race for the France international earlier this month.
The Blues are, of course, still operating under a special licence which does not allow them to sign new players or offer new contracts until the club sale process reaches a conclusion.
Although, even if they had been in the transfer race, it is unclear whether Chelsea were prepared to meet Monaco’s asking price for the midfielder.
RMC Sport claims Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell is looking for a deal in the region of €80million (£67.5m) for Tchouameni.
For Chelsea, the search for new centre-backs is likely a priority since Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are both close to leaving at the end of the season.
The west London club could be in the market for a new midfielder if they decided to sell one of the two key midfielders; Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, who will soon enter the final year of their contracts.
