Report: Chelsea now only need to negotiate bonuses before they confirm signing of ‘commanding’ £31m player

Chelsea are now reportedly just one financial step away from sealing the signature of Benoit Badiashile.

According to the Guardian, negotiating the bonuses involved in the Monaco defender’s contract is the last hurdle before Todd Boehly can confirm his latest signing.

Badiashile is seemingly on the verge of moving to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £31m.

The 21-year-old rather suddenly emerged as an option for Boehly and his team ahead of the January transfer window.

Whilst most fans were looking in the direction of attacking recruits, not many turned to the defence.

Perhaps they should’ve paid more attention to the back-line, considering Chelsea’s own protective unit have struggled so far this season.

Before the 2-0 victory over Bournemouth on Tuesday, Graham Potter’s side had not kept a clean sheet since the 0-0 draw with Brentford in October.

Whilst there were many reasons to celebrate the win against the Cherries, Reece James’ injury was certainly cause for concern.

James had only just returned from a lengthy absence when he was forced off the pitch due to a problem in his knee.

Now potentially out for another month, with Ben Chilwell also absent, Boehly clearly feels the need to provide extra cover to the current defenders.

Step forward Badiashile, who has played most of Monaco’s matches this season when available.

He has also missed a few games through injury, but his performances in general have been promising and ‘commanding’.

They have done enough to earn the Frenchman two senior international call-ups from Didier Deschamps.

Chelsea will certainly be hoping Badiashile can continue his upwards trajectory in their colours next year.
