Report: Chelsea now prepared to make second biggest bid in club history to sign 'amazing' player

Chelsea could reportedly be ready to pay as much as £85million to sign Leicester City star Wesley Fofana.

According to The Sun, the Blues are actually prepared to match Leicester’s colossal £85m asking price for the French centre-back.

It is understood Thomas Tuchel’s side are attempting still to sign the 21-year-old at a lower price, though.

The report explains Chelsea’s co-owner Todd Boehly really wants to land the Foxes defender, so are willing to make him the club’s second most expensive signing ever behind Romelu Lukaku. A transfer bid of £85million would put Fofana second in the list of Chelsea’s record transfer signings.

Chelsea could pay £85million for Fofana

This is a transfer that looks feasible if the Blues are ready to fork out £80million-plus.

Fofana, 21, is no doubt a brilliant talent that does belong in the starting line-up for a top side.

It’s been reported Chelsea are lining up a second offer for the Leicester defender after an initial £63million was snubbed, but how much can the Foxes squeeze out of the deal?

If Chelsea are confident Fofana’s the right profile to be an elite centre-back, investing a gigantic sum isn’t the worst move. The club need to be certain after some recent failures when it comes to big spending, though.

The Leicester ace, described as “amazing” by his manager Brendan Rodgers, ticks so many boxes when you examine him as a defender.

Of course, there will be an element of risk and huge pressure that comes with the transfer. However, Fofana’s temperament and quality in a Leicester shirt so far has been really impressive.

There’s been frustration within the fanbase over the amount of transfer activity on the eve of the new Premier League season, but the new ownership are really starting to throw the gauntlet down now.

Chelsea are actually going into a season unfancied by some, but this is a really talented group that shouldn’t be overlooked.
