Report: Chelsea now set their sights on signing 'excellent' £46m player, just a year after he snubbed Tottenham move

Chelsea scouts are reportedly looking at Villarreal defender Pau Torres as a transfer target.

According to well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have set their sights on the 25-year-old Villarreal star ahead of the summer.

It is explained that the Spain international’s release clause will be valid in the upcoming summer transfer window, with clubs able to sign him for around €55million (£46million) to €60million (£51million).

Romano adds Manchester United and Manchester City are both interested in him, too.

Torres, who’s a left-footed centre-back, is gaining quite the reputation due to his impressive performances this season.

He’s an ever-present in the Villarreal team sat seventh in La Liga, as well as playing a key role in them reaching this campaign’s Champions League semi-final. The Spanish club face off against Liverpool tonight at Anfield in the first leg.

Will Torres come to PL?

For certain, Villarreal talisman Torres would be a fine addition to the Premier League.

Tottenham reportedly failed with their attempts to sign the ball-playing centre-half last summer when he turned down a move to north London. It’s a decision right now you’d have to say worked out for the best given Villarreal are in a European semi-final.

Torres, described as “excellent” by Villarreal’s mayor Jose Benlloch, has received transfer links to Chelsea in the past.

He was linked with a target for the Blues last year, something that Stamford Bridge supporters were very excited about at the time.

He looks like he could be an ideal replacement at Chelsea for Antonio Rudiger, who is going to leave a massive hole in the XI as the left-sided centre-back when he leaves this summer.

One last final check on Torres should be to see how he copes with facing the explosive attacking firepower of Liverpool on Wednesday night.
