Report: Chelsea prepared to offload 'underappreciated' player to help sign £103m star this summer
Chelsea are reportedly willing to offload Timo Werner as part of a deal to sign Juventus centre-half Matthijs de Ligt.
According to Sky Italy, the Blues have a plan to try sign the talented Serie A defender.
It is understood Chelsea may offer their attacker Werner plus £38million in a player-plus-cash deal for De Ligt.
The report explains Italian giants Juventus only plan to accept offers that come close to the centre-back’s £103million release clause.
Werner to Juventus?
It sounds like Werner, 26, is someone Chelsea believe they can let go this summer.
The German forward, who’s been described by his national team manager Hansi Flick as “underappreciated”, has come under a fair amount of scrutiny during his time at Stamford Bridge. His goal record of 23 goals in 89 appearances has disappointed many given his goalscoring prowess at ex-club RB Leipzig.
Thomas Tuchel’s Blues now apparently want to include him in a transfer to drive down De Ligt’s cost.
For certain, Chelsea’s immediate focus in this window should be to strengthen in the heart of defence.
22-year-old defender De Ligt is an impressive youngster that’s strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, albeit there may be reported competition from Manchester United and Manchester City.
He’s already made100-plus appearances for each of Juventus and Ajax, so has matured very quickly at a young age.
It may usually take a young player some time adjusting to life at a Premier League club, but Chelsea definitely need a centre-back signing this summer that can hit the ground running in the new term.
