Report: Chelsea set sights on £37m star who claimed he outpaced Timo Werner

Chelsea will reportedly consider Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano as a possible target in this transfer window.

According to 90min, Bayern’s 23-year-old centre-back is a player being looked at by Chelsea.

It is understood the Blues are now searching across Europe for alternative centre-half targets to Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, as a deal to bring him to Stamford Bridge continues to stall.

The report names Bayern pair Upamecano and Benjamin Pavard as candidates for Thomas Tuchel’s side. Also, Villarreal’s Pau Torres, Inter’s Milan Skriniar and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol are the other defenders to be checked on.

Incidentally, Blues manager Tuchel reportedly has doubts over signing Kounde due to his 5ft 10in frame.

Chelsea consider Dayot Upamecano

Upamecano, who joined Bayern for £37million in 2021, is a powerhouse French centre-back.

The 6ft 1in defender impressed last season with 38 games across all competitions for German champions Bayern, which included important roles both domestically and in Europe.

He’s an extremely athletic player with great pace and strength. It looks like he’d be tailor-made for the Premier League.

Outpacing Timo Werner

Upamecano is an ex-teammate of Chelsea forward Timo Werner, with the duo previously enjoying success together at RB Leipzig earlier in their careers.

The Bayern star once recalled a very interesting story about him outsprinting 26-year-old speedster Werner in a Leipzig training session.

For certain, Upamecano is someone that will back himself in a footrace against most.

It would make him a valuable asset to the Chelsea backline, but the transfer links aren’t too strong at this stage.
