Chelsea have reportedly been told by Memphis Depay’s entourage that he could be available in January.
According to SPORT, those close to the Barcelona forward have made clubs aware that he might be up for grabs straight after the World Cup.
It feels a matter of when, not if, Depay departs the Camp Nou.
His contract expires in June and it’s not exactly been smiles and sunshine since he moved to Spain in 2021.
He has struggled to tie down a regular starting birth, mainly because of his frustrating injury record.
The 28-year-old, described as ‘fantastic’ by former manager Ronald Koeman, has played just three times all season, with a thigh issue keeping him side-lined.
Depay is down but not out
Few would blame Depay for seeking out a fresh adventure away from La Liga and it seems Barca will not stand in his way.
Xavi’s employers would like to get some money back on the attacker that hasn’t quite delivered the jewels just yet.
Chelsea are said to be one of the interested suitors, along with Arsenal and Manchester United.
This could be a match made in heaven.
Depay apparently wants to move to Stamford Bridge and will not be content with playing at a lower standard.
SPORT claim ‘he will not go to a second-rate club’, which is way he ‘ruled out’ a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur a few months ago.
That’s one way to bond with the Blues fans already.
